For the most part, Becka grew up being able to eat whatever she wanted. From a young age she had some onset digestive complications, but they weren’t serious enough to do anything about. It wasn’t until she was a teenager that she developed unexplained acid reflux and intestinal pain, which began a slippery slope into the world of prescription drugs. Her doctor kept telling her to just ‘take another pill for it’ and things would get better – they didn’t.
By the time she went off to university, her health began to take a turn for the worst. She was noticeability losing patches of hair on her head, to the point that she was embarrassed to wear her hair in a ponytail and also began rapidly losing weight. Becka was constantly sick, had severe lifelong asthma, horrendous seasonal allergies and eventually began to develop anxiety to the point that she would have anxiety attacks. She also had a very unhealthy relationship with food. Eating often led to discomfort, followed by IBS-type symptoms. There were days where undigested food would sit in her stomach for so long that she would intentionally make herself sick just relieve the discomfort.
Becka had hit her own kind of rock bottom and needed a change. She was a walking pharmacy consistently on antibiotics, antihistamines, antidepressants, heavy steroids and PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) – just to name a few. She didn’t enjoy food and frankly, wasn’t happy with her life due to the way she felt, mentally and physically. Keep in mind – this was all at the young age of 21! Becka was sick, tired and full of inflammation!
Looking back, it was best thing that could have ever happened. It’s what began her holistic journey to better health. After exhausting all conventional recommendations and feeling at an all-time low, she decided it was time to take matters into her own hands. She committed to trying a gluten free diet for three months, as that’s the recommended time the body needs to begin repairing itself (if that’s the real issue). Let’s just say those three months have turned into five years. Within the first year, all health complications listed above essentially disappeared and have never returned.
Looking back now, gluten wasn’t the only key player in healing her body. With the gluten free diet, also came cutting out most highly processed and refined foods. It was truly a mind-blowing discovery to think that food could have such a profound effect on the body. Five years later, Becka has transitioned into a fully natural lifestyle when it comes to food, health, beauty and her own personal growth.
She started Going Grainless as a fun Instagram account in late 2014, since then it’s grown into one of her greatest passions. She strives to make the transition to a healthy lifestyle an enjoyable experience, by providing delicious recipes and practical information.
Please note: At this time, Becka is not a licensed professional. Everything she expresses has been lived through her own personal experiences as she made the change to a gluten free and now grain free lifestyle.
